Fun with Phonics (Phase 1)

  • Type

    Ongoing class

  • Duration

    10 classes (60 mins / class)

  • Size

    8 students / class

Julian Yon has created a synthetic phonics course where students learn the relationship between sounds and letters. This is a multi-sensory course that involves a variety of fun activities. The child will be encouraged to play with the different sounds throughout this course. This level is intended to develop children’s listening, vocabulary and speaking skills. Decoding words aids in the development of word recognition, which in turn increases reading fluency. We do not learn the sounds in alphabetical order, but rather in an order that makes it possible to form words sooner. Phonemic awareness is understanding that spoken words can be broken into smaller segments, or phonemes. Phonics is the knowledge that letter symbols represent sounds and can be put together to make different words. Understanding these two components of reading are the foundation to reading fluently.
Course will cover:
  • Environmental sounds
  • Rhyming words
  • Learn the sounds that letters make (44 phonemes)
  • Learn the most used phonemes first, starting with: /s/, /a/, /t/, /i/, /p/, /n/
  • Teaching phonemes in 5 different sets (the other two sets will be completed in Phase 3)
  • Decoding and spelling words through phonics
  • High frequency ‘tricky words’ like ‘the’ and ‘go.’
You can expect your child to:
  1. Discriminate between different sounds
  2. Understand and master phonics letters and sounds and how to use them in words.
  3. Read and spell both new words and familiar words with confidence.
  4. Pronounce, spell and use numerous high frequency words in English.
  5. Students will use short phrases and simple sentences to express themselves in oral format.
  6. Read some vowel-consonant (VC) and consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, and to spell them out.
  7. Identify initial consonant sounds and the letters that represent those sounds.
  8. Indicate awareness of consonant sounds and letters by responding with a physical movement.
  9. Be able to make the correct sound for each letter of the alphabet. Blending sounds to make words
