Julian Yon has created a course that builds on the Phase 1 Phonics. In this course, the student will learn to blend, segment and pronounce short and long vowels. New tricky words will also be introduced. It allows early readers to explore language and find patterns to help them read and spell.
This course will cover:
  • Reading and spelling CVC words
  • Reading, spelling and understanding Tricky Words
  • Tricky words: the, to, I, no, go
  • Short vowel word families. Example: a/am/an, ad/ag/ap/at, e/et/en/ed, i/ip/ib/id, in/ig/it/ix, o/ot/op, u/ug/ud/up, ut/ub/um/un)
  • Long vowel words families. Examples:
  • Long a: a_e/ame/ake/ate/ave
  • Long I: i_e/ime/ike/ive/ine
  • Long o: o_e
  • Long u: u_e
  • Long a: ai/ay
  • Long e: ee/ea/y/ey
  • Long i: igh/ie/y
  • Long u: ue/ui/ew/oo
You can expect your child to:
  1. Blend new CVC words with confidence
  2. Use segmenting to listen for individual sounds in words and then to write them using letters.
  3. Understand the structures and features of simple phrases and sentences.
  4. Break up (segment) a word into its individual sounds (phonemes), such as ‘c-a-t’, and then how to blend the sounds together to read the whole word – ‘cat’.
  5. Practice identifying the short A sound in the -ad and -at word families.
  6. Give examples of the difference between the long and short A sounds.
  7. Possible answers include: gate and pat.
  8. Recognize short vowel sounds by reading and listening to a story that highlights select words Identify short-vowel sounds that complete C-V-C words
  9. Name words with the same short-vowel sounds
  10. Apply the skill of blending phonemes to read words
  11. Segment words into their constituent phonemes to spell words.
  12. Be able to recognize that a three-letter word is made up of three distinct sounds.
