What’s your name?

My name is Tan Tze Yee. I am an Astrophysicist and an aspiring Deep Learning Computer Vision Engineer.

What’s your teaching experience?

I tutored at Kumon Mathematics and Ace Edventure English, and was a taekwondo instructor and referee during my college years. Throughout university, I was the pioneering secretary and treasurer of a space engineering society, where I ran workshops on robotics and remote imaging. On my internship, I devised a “Think Like A Physicist” curriculum that has been successfully integrated into the fresher’s course. After graduating, I worked as a Physics and Mathematics teacher at a prestigious British International School, while offering Japanese and Python co-curricular activities. I am also a tutor at various institutions.

What qualifications do you have? (Bachelor’s in education, CELTA, TESOL, etc)

Masters in Physics from Durham University (UK), specializing in the simulation and machine learning of exotic astronomical detectors.

How do you teach that helps students learn efficiently?

Throughout my diverse experiences teaching in various unexpected situations, I am driven by two core principles. First and foremost, is to impart a sense of wonder and utility into the topic being taught. Being able to visually showcase the cutting edge while demonstrating its usefulness in our daily lives keeps a student motivated both for the present and the future. Secondly, is to be attentive and compassionate with students. A classroom’s most important resource is the teacher, and since the time spent together is only second to family and friends, it is of outmost importance to be both an upstanding role model to students, yet humble and down-to-earth.

Why do you enjoy teaching?

Being able to impart my passion and wisdom to aspiring future generations imbues me with a sense of honour and progress. The amazement that students display on their faces when they overcome their misconceptions and realize their untapped potential is truly a magical moment. Most importantly, I can gain the most unexpected of insights from the students themselves!

What’s one fun fact about you?

The Linux operating system has been my daily driver on my computers for a decade.
