What’s your name?

My name is Maha and I am an English Language teacher.

What’s your teaching experience?

I have an extensive 19 year teaching experience behind me that spans Africa and Europe. I taught in educational institutes in the UK, Egypt, Estonia, Hungary, Turkey and Sudan where I covered national
and international exam board preparations and assessments. I have been teaching English Language and Literature at international schools, colleges and universities. Some of the subjects I taught encompass all four language skills reading, writing, listening and speaking, as well as British Literature, African Literature, Shakespearean Studies, English for Academic Purposes, Study Skills, Business English, Writing Structures, Writing
Development, Creative Writing and Expository Writing amongst other shorter courses and workshops, such as the IELTS.

I have taught on a one-to-one bases as well as well larger groups of 30-40 at schools and over 200 students at university level. Many of my students in the past 19 years have done exceptionally well in their exams and successfully entered top universities all over the world.

How do you teach that helps students learn efficiently?

I believe there is a different way to teach each and every student because I love to find what best works for the learner as they share their feedback after each exercise I give. I try to maintain a
positive, supportive and reassuring spirit with learners by explaining complex ideas in a simple clear way, dissecting lessons to shorter, more tangible doses. Allocating time for students to engage, discuss and process content, then applying practically what they learn is an important factor. I consider giving short assignment and quizzes where time-management can be developed also helps when under exam conditions.

I also understand that students should be aware that learning is a process and mistakes are a natural part of learning.

Why do you enjoy teaching?

Teaching is definitely a process where you can see learners grow, change and understand what was complex to them previously is priceless. I enjoy teaching because Inspiring and getting inspired by my students is a continuous process and the unpredictability of it is never boring. You are always pleasantly surprised by a student who finally gets something or comes up with a brilliant idea of their own gives me immense pleasure. Improving on the quality of education as a whole and as a subject in particular is important, and this happens when you put your creativity hat on and the work alongside the students in overcoming the different challenges they face in their study path(s). I am
always ready and eager to make a difference to all students, as we all leverage our strengths from the collective that is in the course.

What’s one fun fact about you?

I am a ‘bookworm’ and a scrabble addict. I enjoy reading and collecting books, especially by international writers and I love playing scrabble with anyone who would challenge me. I am very competitive and always try to try out and test opponents. I’m actually a fan of board games and enjoy the fun and entertainment shared by all.
