What’s your name?

My name is Teng Zi Qian (Lucas) and I am a Science and Math teacher who specializes in teaching Chemistry!

What’s your teaching experience?

I started teaching in 2017 when I finished my A level education in Temasek Junior College. I started as a private tutor under various tuition agencies like EliteTutor, SmileTutor and NanYangTuition Agency. However, from 2019 onwards, I went solo as I began having more students requesting for my service personally outside of these platforms. I mainly teach secondary 4 express students in pure and combined Chemistry. I also teach E/A Math, Physics and Chinese. I taught over 40 over students privately, one to one. Most of them had a drastic improvement in not only grades, but attitude towards studying. I also teach JC students H1/H2 chemistry as well as H1 physics.

How do you teach that helps students learn efficiently?

To me, teaching is not just about passing the knowledge to student by reading off a textbook black and white. Teaching is more about helping the students understand the importance of education rather than blindly memorizing content to pass an exam. By motivating the students in the right way and guiding them to have the right mindset and attitude, their results will improve easily. Attitude determines altitude!

Why do you enjoy teaching?

Teaching gives me a huge sense of accomplishment when I see the looks of joy on my students’ face when they begin doing well in school. Teaching is a noble job with a huge responsibility as parents entrust their children’s future to us and we must do our utmost to deliver only the best result. I also enjoy interacting with my students on a more personal level by talking about day-to-day life and their interests. It wasn’t too long ago that I was in their shoes, hence I can empathize with them and establish a strong bond of familiarity with them.

What’s one fun fact about you?

I specialize in medicinal chemistry as my major and have a minor in forensic science as I aspire to be a forensic scientist in HSA. I also have a minor in psychology to help me understand human nature better.
